Mets move to Shea stadium after playing their first 2 seasons in the Polo Grounds. For the second of three times, the Mets lose their first game at their new stadium.

The Mets hosted the All Star game, which the National League won with four runs in the bottom of the ninth. Willie Mays walked, stole, and scored the game's tying run, and then with 2 outs Johnny Callison hit a 3-run walk off homer to win it.

On August 27 The Mets signed Jerry Koosman for their minor league team. Koosman had been recommended by the son of a Shea Stadium usher who saw Koosman pitch in the army.

The Mets won just 53 games and finished last again. Their record was 53-109

The low point of the season was when the Phillies' Jim Bunning threw a perfect game against the Mets on Father's Day.
