The Mets continued on a decline in 1992. Managed by Jeff Torborg, the team posted a won-lost record of 72-90 for the season. The Mets ended up fifth in the National League Eastern Division.

April

The Mets season started off in a positive way. They won 13 games while losing nine in April. On Opening Day in St. Louis, the team came away with a 4-2 win over the Cardinals on a home run by Bobby Bonilla in the 10th inning on April 6. The Mets won two of six on their first home stand of the year and two of three in an ensuing series at Montreal. From April 21 to April 23, they swept a three-game series against the Cardinals at Shea Stadium. After dropping two of three at Philadelphia, the Mets ended the month with three straight victories over the Astros at Shea. The team stood second in the division, three games in back of the Pirates.

May

May was a difficult month for the Mets. The team staggered to a 12-15 record. On a month-opening road trip, the Mets won three games and lost four. They followed up with a three-game sweep over the Dodgers a pair of losses in three games against the Padres at Shea. On a west coast trip from May 15 to May 24, the Mets had five wins and five defeats. The team ended May with four consecutive losses to the Reds and Braves at Shea. They were third in the N. L. East, but only two games behind the front-running Cardinals.

June

In June, the Mets continued to drop. They won 11 games and had a .393 percentage for the month. The Mets recorded two wins over the Giants at Shea on the first two days of June, but lost five times on an ensuing seven–game road trip to Pittsburgh and Montreal. The team broke a five-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Expos at Shea on June 16. At Shea from June 21 to June 24, the Mets won four straight games against the Cardinals and Cubs. They closed out the month with five losses in six game played. With a 36-41 record on the season, the Mets fell to fifth place in the division.

July

The Mets had an improved month in July. The team recorded 13 wins and 11 losses for a .542 winning percentage. On July 1, the Mets started the month with a 6-4 victory over the Cubs in 12 innings at Chicago. They won four of seven on a road trip to Atlanta and Houston just before the All-Star Break. Against the west coast teams at Shea from July 16 to July 26, the Mets won six of ten games. They lost twice in three games at Philadelphia to end the month. The team was fourth in the East, five games behind the first-place Pirates.

August

In August, the Mets fell back again. They posted an 11-17 monthly record for the second time during the year. After starting the month with two wins in three games against the Cubs at Shea, the Mets lost six in a row at Pittsburgh and Chicago. On August 10, the skid reached seven games with a 4-2 defeat to the Pirates in 16 innings at Shea. The Mets swept a three-game series against the Giants from August 24 to August 26 to finish a west coast trip on which they went 4-4. They won all four games of an ensuing series against the Reds at Shea. On August 31, the Mets ended the month with a pair of losses to the Braves in a doubleheader at Shea. The team stood in fifth place in the N. L. East.

September/October

The last five weeks of the season were not kind to the Mets. They had 12 wins and 21 defeats to finish the year. On the first two days of September, the Mets split a pair of games with the Braves at Shea. The team lost eight times on an ensuing 12-game road trip. The Mets snapped a three-game skid with a 7-5 victory over the Expos on September 19 at Shea. They dropped all three games of a series at Pittsburgh that gave the Bucs the division title. At Shea from September 28 to October 4, the Mets won three games and lost four against the Phillies and Pirates in the season’s final week. The team ended up 24 games behind Pittsburgh.
