In 2003, the Mets entered the season with renewed hope. They hired Art Howe as manager and enhanced their pitching staff with the additions of Tom Glavine and a returned David Cone. Despite the new look, the team staggered to a 66-95 won-lost record and its second straight fifth-place finish in the National League Eastern Division.

March/April

The Mets began the '03 season with 11 wins and 15 losses. They had a 3-3 record in a season-opening home stand between March 31 and April 6. t Pittsburgh on April 15, the Mets recorded a 3-1 win over the Pirates to snap a six-game losing streak. The team won five of nine games at Shea Stadium from April 18 to April 27. The Mets concluded the month of April with a pair of defeats at St. Louis that placed them six games behind the co-leading Braves and Expos in the division.

May

In May, the Mets had a break-even month. The team won 14 of its 28 games for a .500 percentage. At Milwaukee on May 2, the Mets ended a five-game skid with a 9-3 victory over the Brewers. They split six games against the Dodgers and Padres at Shea from May 6 to May 11. The Mets chalked up a 5-1 win at San Francisco on May 17 that halted a four-game losing streak. They closed out the month with seven wins in twelve games. The Mets were at the bottom of the N. L. East, one percentage point behind the fourth-place Marlins.

June

The Mets had a rough month of June. They compiled a .385 winning percentage with a 10-16 record. After dropping four of its first six June games, the team won two of three in each of two series at Texas and Anaheim. The Mets split four games at Florida and followed with four losses in five games at Shea. On June 30, they ended the month with a 3-1 win over the Expos at Shea to end a five-game losing streak. At 35-46 on the season, the Mets were the only team in the division below the .500 mark.

July

Life only got worse for the Mets in July. The team went 9-18 for a .333 winning percentage during the month. They started July with four wins in five games, but followed with a six-game losing streak. On July 13, the Mets ended the skid with a 4-3 victory over the Phillies at Shea. The team went 2-6 on a road trip between July 17 and July 24. They lost five of seven against the Reds and Brewers between July 25 and July 31 at Shea. The floundering Mets found themselves buried in last place, ten and one-half games behind the fourth-place Expos and 27 in back of the division-leading Braves.

August

In August, the Mets finally posted a winning record. They had a 15-12 mark for the month. The team recorded four wins in five games from August 3 to August 8. They swept a home stand with six straight victories over the Giants and Rockies between August 12 and August 18. The Mets won five of nine games on an ensuing road trip to San Diego, Los Angeles and Atlanta. They lost three consecutive games to the Phillies at Shea to end the month. The team was 27 and one-half games behind the first-place Braves.

September

In September, the Mets had another sub-par month. They suffered through a 7-19 record for a .269 percentage to close out the season. The team began the month with three wins over the Braves at Shea from September 1 to September 3. They followed with a pair of eight-game losing streaks, seperated by a 5-4 win at Montreal on September 13. The Mets won two of three games against the Pirates at Shea between September 23 and September 25. The team ended the year with a pair of losses in a three-game series at Florida. The Mets wound up 34 and one-half games behind the division-champion Braves.
