After the Mets had a horrible season the year before, the Mets fired Jim Duquette and got Omar Minaya as their new GM. Omar hired Willie Randolph to be the Mets' new manager and then signed Carlos Beltran and Pedro Martinez, two of the top free agents that offseason.

David Wright completed his first full season with the Mets and both he and Jose Reyes were significant contributors to the teams success.

The Mets won more than half their games for the first time since 2001. They were a half game out of the Wild Card race as September started, before a typical terrible September led to them finishing seven games out and with a record of 83-79. Mike Piazza played his last game as a Met in 2005.

After the season the Mets announced plans to establish their own cable network for Mets games called SNY (Sports Net New York).
