The Mets were already looking at a turn for the better after 2005. And in the offseason Omar Minaya traded Mike Jacobs and Yusmeiro Petit for first baseman Carlos Delgado. The Mets also signed closer Billy Wagner. The Mets launched thier cable network SNY.
It was the Mets best season since 2000. They started the season very hot and by the end of April they were five games ahead of the Braves for first place.
On September 17, the Mets clinched the NL East, and they ended the season 16 games better than the second place Phillies. In the postseason, the Mets swept the Dodgers in the NLDS. In the NLCS, the Mets and Cardinals split the first six games.
Game Seven
Oliver Perez got the start for the Mets and the guy whom the Mets couldn't hit in the playoffs got the start for the Cardinals, Jeff Suppan. They both did a great job only giving up one run each.
In game seven was a close 1-1 tie, The Met run came on a David Wright RBI single that drove in Carlos Beltran. In the bottom of the sixth inning with Jim Edmondson on first. Scot Rolen hit a deep fly ball to left field that was going to go over the wall, But not on Endy Chavez's watch. He made a great wall climbing catch and threw the ball to first base to make the double play, which ended the inning. Many consider it the best play ever made in the playoffs.
In the top of the ninth Aaron Heilman gave up a two run homer to Yadier Molina. The bottom of the ninth was the Mets last shot to keep their World Series hopes alive. The Mets managed to get the bases loaded with two out for Carlos Beltran, Carlos struck out looking on three pitches not swinging the bat even once ending the Mets season, and the stadium was left shocked and silent.
At the end of the season Beltran finished third in MVP voting, David Wright finished seventh, and Jose Reyes ninth. It was the only time the Mets ever placed three players in the top ten of MVP voting.
