Benny Agbayani was an outfielder for the Mets from 1998 to 2001. He batted .282 in 322 games with the team. Agbayani had 35 home runs and 129 runs batted in as a member of the Mets.
Agbayani began his major league career with the Mets in '98. He played all three outfield positions over 11 game appearances during the year. On June 19, Benny got his first major league hit with a leadoff single in the first inning against the Marlins at Shea Stadium.
In 1999, Agbayani had 14 home runs among his 79 hits in 101 games with the Mets. He also had 18 doubles and 42 RBIs for the season. In the first game of a doubleheader against the Brewers at Shea on May 20, Benny hit two singles and two homers in the Mets' 11-10 win. He drove in three runs with two singles in a 7-2 Mets victory over the Yankees in the Bronx on June 6. Agbayani had a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly in the Mets' 10-5 win at Colorado on September 15. Against the Diamondbacks on October 9, he had a run-scoring double in Game 4 of the National League Division Series at Shea. The Mets won this game, 4-3, in 10 innings to advance in the post-season.
Benny batted .289 with 15 homers and 60 RBIs in 2000. He had 168 total bases and 59 runs scored for the season. In the 11th inning on March 30, Agbayani hit a grand slam as a pinch-hitter to give the Mets a 5-1 win over the Cubs in the second of a two-game series between the two teams in Tokyo, Japan. He homered twice in a 10-8 Mets win at Chicago on June 14. At Shea on June 26, Benny hit two home runs in the Mets' 10-5 victory over the Marlins. He also had four hits and three RBIs in a 9-8 Mets win in the first game of a doubleheader at Montreal on July 27.
In the 2000 post-season, Agbayani had 16 hits in 50 at-bats for a .320 batting average. He had two standout moments during the Mets title quest. On October 7, Benny hit a home run in the 13th inning to give the Mets a 3-2 victory over the Giants in Game 3 of the National League Division Series at Shea. He also hit a game-winning double in the eighth inning of the Mets' 4-2 win at Shea over the Yankees in Game 3 of the World Series.
Two stints on the disabled list limited Agbayani to 91 games in 2001. He had 82 hits for 118 total bases while driving in 27 runs. At St. Louis on April 28, Benny drove in the winning run with a single in the 11th inning for a 6-5 Mets win over the Cardinals. He had a two-run single during the Mets' six-run eighth inning that led to an 8-7 victory over the Yankees at Shea on June 17. Agbayani had a run-scoring single and a homer in a 4-3 win over the Phillies at Shea on July 28. He also singled to drive in the Mets' only two runs of the game before a six-run 10th inning gave the team an 8-2 triumph on August 1 at Houston.
On January 21, 2002, Agbayani and Todd Zeile were traded to the Colorado Rockies for Alex Ochoa and two minor league players. Benny split the '02 season between the Rockies and the Boston Red Sox to conclude his career in the major leagues. He later played six seasons in Japan with the Chiba Lotte Marines.
