Doug Flynn was a second baseman for the Mets from 1977 to 1981. He scored 156 runs in 636 games in his four and one-half seasons with the team. Flynn had 58 doubles and 26 triples among his 500 hits as a Met.

Flynn was acquired by the Mets with Pat Zachry, Steve Henderson and Dan Norman from the Reds in a trade for Tom Seaver on June 15, 1977. He split time between shortstop and second base over the second half of the '77 season. On July 27, Doug hit his only triple of the year in a 7-4 Mets win at San Francisco. On August 16, he had two singles, a double and a steal of home in the Mets' 5-1 win at St. Louis. Flynn also had a single and two doubles in the Mets' 5-2 loss at Houston on August 31.

In 1978, Flynn became the Mets' full-time second baseman. He played 156 games and collected 126 hits for the season. In the Mets' 7-3 win at Pittsburgh on May 23, Doug had two singles, a double and a triple. On June 17, he had three singles in a 5-4 Mets win at San Francisco. Flynn singled, tripled and scored two runs on August 30 as the Mets defeated the Giants, 10-4, at Candlestick Park.

Doug had a career-high 4 home runs in 1979. He also drove in 61 runs for another personal best. He homered for the first time as a Met on May 1 in the team's 10-5 loss to the Padres at Shea Stadium. On June 12, Flynn hit an inside-the-park three-run homer during a 10-run sixth inning in the Mets' 12-6 win over the Reds at Shea. He homered in the sixth and scored a run in the eighth in the Mets' 2-0 win over the Braves at Shea on June 16. Doug drove in three runs with a single and a double in a 5-0 Mets win over the Astros on August 21 at Shea. At Philadelphia on September 6, he broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run homer off Nino Espinosa that led to a 5-3 Mets win in the first game of a doubleheader.

With a .991 fielding percentage, Flynn became the third Mets player to win a Gold Glove Award in 1980. That year, he led the team with 8 triples, three of which came in one game in Montreal on August 5. Doug also had three singles in the Mets' 9-5 win over the Expos in the first game of a doubleheader at Montreal on July 4. In Pittsburgh on September 20, he had two singles, a double and 2 RBIs in the Mets' 9-8 win over the Pirates in 11 innings.

Flynn led all Mets players with 105 games played in the strike-shortened 1981 season. He compiled a batting average of .255 with 24 RBIs for the year. On Opening Day on April 9, Doug hit two doubles in the Mets' 2-0 win at Chicago. Six days later, he had a two-run single to spark the Mets to a 5-3 win over the Cardinals in the team's home opener. Flynn hit a two-run triple in the Mets' seven-run ninth inning against the Giants at Shea on May 5. He hit his only homer of the season in a 3-2 Mets win over the Giants on May 7 at Shea. Doug also had two doubles and two runs scored in the Mets' 7-6 win over the Cardinals at Shea on September 20.

On December 11, 1981, Flynn and pitcher Dan Boitano were traded to the Texas Rangers for Jim Kern. Doug played four more years in the major leagues with the Rangers, Expos and Tigers. In 1997, he served as a manager in the Mets' minor league system.
