Gary Sheffield made his professional debut September 3, 1988, 21 years ago last fall. Now 40 years old, the nephew of former Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden has signed with his uncle's former team.
Sitting at 499 career home runs when he signed with the Mets, Sheffield was given many opportunities early on to prove he can still hit. On April 17, 2009, Sheffield hit his 500th career home run and sparked a comeback win against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Some Mets fans still feel signing Sheffield was a bad move, as it reduced the playing time of Ryan Church and Fernando Tatis in right field and also prevented young prospect Nick Evans from making the big league club. However, regardless of his age and stats, he is still a threat off the bench for the Mets and opposing teams will still have to take his power into consideration.
While he might not be a 2007 Marlon Anderson, Gary Sheffield is a welcome face in the Mets clubhouse. ---A Wharton 21:30, April 20 2009 (UTC)
