The Mets pulled off one of their best transactions ever in 1984. The team dealt four players to obtain a catcher that solidified the team on its way to a World Championship. Gary Carter came to the Mets from the Montreal Expos in exchange for infielder Hubie Brooks, catcher Mike Fitzgerald, outfielder Herm Winningham and pitcher Floyd Youmans.

Carter proved to be worth the expenditure of four young players. He served as the Mets full-time catcher for five seasons. The team experienced the most successful period of its history during the time that Gary was behind the plate. From 1985 to 1989, Gary played in 600 games for the Mets and hit 89 home runs with 349 runs batted in. He also played in all 20 of the Mets' post-season games in 1986 and 1988.

The deal did not leave the Expos without value of their own. Fitzgerald played in 633 games in seven seasons with the Montreal team. Brooks hit .275 with 75 homers in five seasons with the Expos. Winningham had 218 hits in four seasons with Montreal. Youmans had 29 wins and 404 strikeouts in his four years as an Expo.
