Joe Torre
From The Met Wiki
Joe Torre is most known as the manager of a great Yankee dynasty, but he began his managerial career (and ended his playing career) with some terrible years with the Mets.
The Mets acquired Torre following the 1974 season, but his best years were behind him.
In 1977 Torre became the Mets' player-manager, a position he held for just 18 days, before retiring as a player. He managed the Mets to 5 straight bad seasons.
The Mets were essentially the transition period that helped Torre develop from a great player to a great manager. Sadly, while with the Mets he was neither.
Torre's career highlights:
- Gold Glove catcher for the Braves, who in 1966 hit .315 with 36 homers
- MVP-winning 3rd baseman for the Cardinals, hitting .363 with 24 homers and 137 RBI in 1971
- Sporting News' Manager of the Decade, 2 time Manager of the Year Awards, 13 division championships, and 4 World Series championships.
- Set National League record by grounding into 4 double plays in one game.
Any guesses which of those achievements was accomplished as a Met?
