1957: New York attorney William A. Shea announces the formation of a third major league (known as the Continental League) to begin play in 1961. One of the charter teams for the new league would be placed in New York.
1993: Jeff Kent drives in all the Mets' runs with two homers in a 4-3 win over the Marlins at Shea Stadium.
