1961: New York's National League club announces that the team will be known as the Mets. The name is an abbreviation of the corporate name of New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc.. It is also the name used by a New York team from the 19th Century.
1963: Ed Kranepool's double in the bottom of the ninth inning gives the Mets a 3-2 win over the Phillies.
1964: Jesse Gonder hits the first Mets triple at Shea Stadium. The three-base hit drives home a run in the first inning. The Mets go on to defeat the Cardinals, 5-4.
1965: Ron Swoboda drives in all the Mets' runs with 2 homers in a 4-2 win over the Braves at Shea Stadium.
1983: After falling behind by five runs in the first inning, the Mets come back to defeat the Reds, 10-5, at Shea Stadium. A three-run homer by George Foster highlights a 6-run seventh inning and Darryl Strawberry gets his first major league hit.
1992: The Mets defeat the Dodgers, 4-3. Rodney McCray drives in the winning run with a single in his only at bat as a Met.
2010: Henry Blanco hits a home run in the 11th inning for a 5-4 Mets win over the Giants. It is Blanco's first homer as a Met and the team's second straight win with a "walk-off" homer. Rod Barajas had hit one the previous night.
