The word collapse comes up every time you think about the Mets. The Mets have managed to show the no matter how big the lead is, they can find a way to blow it.
1998
With a one game lead in the Wild Card race, and only five games left in the season. The Mets found a way to lose five games in a row to the Expose and Braves to fall behind the Cubs to get out of the playoffs.
2007
The Mets had a seven game lead with 14 games left, imposable to blow right? Wrong. the Mets ended up losing the division on the last day of the season after Tom Glavine gave up 8 runs in the first inning.
2008
This collapse was not as big as the 2007 collapse. They has a 3.5 half game lead with 17 games left.
The Mets and Brewers were tied in the last day of the season. The Brewers won there game so it was all up to the Mets to win the game if they wanted to keep there playoff hopes alive.
Mets RP Scott Schoeneweis blew the game in the sixth inning giving up two home runs as the Mets lose 4-2.
They ended up losing the east by three games and the Wild Card by one game. The main factor of the fall was the bullpen who kept on losing games in late innings.
