The Mets were looking to get better and contend as the Marlins were looking to get rid of big contracts, Carlos Delgado was the guy making the most money in Florida.
Minaya had tried to sign Delgado as a free agent the previous offseason, but Delgado preferred Florida. However the Marlins attempt to be a moderate-budget team was short lived, and after the 2005 season they decided to shed Delgado's big contract.
Mike Jacobs was looking great with the Mets, the young talented first baseman was just what the Marlins were looking for, Yusmeiro Petit was the Mets top prospect other then Lastings Milledge.
