Mike Phillips played in 241 games with the Mets from 1975 to 1979. He had a batting average of .250 with 6 home runs and 60 runs batted in. Phillips was primarily a shortstop, but also spent time at second and third base.

Mike was obtained by the Mets from the San Francisco Giants on May 3, 1975. He went on to become the Mets' leader in triples that season with seven. At Shea Stadium on May 11, Phillips made a key throw to the plate for an out and scored the winning run in a 3-2 Mets win over the Reds. He hit a two-run triple in a 7-2 Mets victory at San Diego on June 13. Mike had a three-run double in the Mets' 7-0 victory over the Expos on August 7 at Shea. He also doubled, tripled and scored twice in a 3-0 Mets win over the Giants at Shea on August 17.

In 1976, Phillips led the team in triples again with a total of six. On June 25, he became the third Mets player to hit for the cycle in the team's 7-4 win at Chicago. Mike also homered in each of the Mets' next two games of the series against the Cubs. Phillips was named National League Player of the Week for his accomplishments.

In 1977, Mike hit a home run in the Mets' 6-3 loss to the Padres on May 11. This was the only homer he ever hit at Shea in his career.

Phillips was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals on June 15, 1977 for Joel Youngblood. Mike remained with the Cardinals until 1980 and split the 1981 season between the San Diego Padres and Montreal Expos. He played his final major league season with the Expos in 1983.
