Leading 2-1 in the Series, the Mets aimed for the clincher. They set their hopes on Bobby Jones, who would have the best game of his career. Jones pitched a one-hitter for a 4-0 win that put the Mets into the League Championship Series.
Jones was masterful. He retired the San Francisco batters in order in eight of the nine innings. Only in the fifth, when he gave up a double to Jeff Kent and two walks did the Giants have any baserunners.
The Mets provided Jones with all the support he would need in the first inning. Robin Ventura hit a two-run homer off Giants' starter Mark Gardner for the initial lead. The rest of their scoring came in the fifth on an RBI double by Edgardo Alfonzo that scored Jones and Timo Perez.
The final out was recorded when Jones got Barry Bonds to fly out to center fielder Jay Payton. The Mets had taken the Series on a stellar pitching performance and were headed to the NLCS for the second straight year.
